What types of fuel card misuse are there?

Fuel card fraud can take many forms. Criminals are constantly developing new tricks to use fuel cards illegally. However, employees within your own company can also misuse company fuel cards. Below, we inform you about some of the most common methods.

External fuel card misuse

External attackers aim to use fuel cards undetected for their own purposes. It is crucial to be familiar with the most common types of fraud and to take appropriate protective measures.

Skimming: Fraudsters manipulate card readers and steal card data and PIN codes.

Card Theft: Fuel cards and PIN codes in the vehicle are easy targets for thieves.

Card Swapping: Thieves exchange stolen cards for those in the vehicle.

Identity Theft: Criminals apply for fuel cards in the name of your company.

Theft in the Post: cards and PINs are stolen or copied on the way to the customer.

Phishing Emails: Clicking on a link in an email gives fraudsters access to sensitive data.

Internal fuel card misuse

Unfortunately, fuel card misuse can also occur within your own company. Employees who have access to the cards sometimes use them for private purposes or in collaboration with third parties for fraudulent activities.

Fuel for Other Vehicles: Fuel ends up in other vehicles instead of the company car.

Billing of Several Fuel Pumps: Several vehicles are refueled with one card.

Incorrect Billing: Unfilled fuel is billed and the money is pocketed.

Copy of the Card for Money: Employees have copies of the fuel card made and receive cash.

Overfueling: More fuel than necessary is filled up and used privately or sold.

How to Protect Yourself Effectively Against Fuel Card Fraud

Protect yourself and your company from fuel card misuse with these simple but effective measures:

  • Never leave your card in an unattended vehicle.
  • Never let the card out of your hand - do not allow the service station staff to take it into other rooms.
  • Report suspicious activities at filling stations to your fleet manager immediately, even if you are not affected yourself.
  • Pay particular attention to tampering with the card reader at unmanned fuel terminals.

  • Never give the PIN to third parties.
  • Never write down the PIN - and certainly not on the card itself.
  • Always cover the input field when entering data.
  • Always use a system-generated PIN for maximum security.
  • Destroy PIN letters immediately upon receipt.
  • Tip: It's best to use the DKV ePIN function for even more security!

  • Adjust the daily, weekly and monthly limits of your cards to your usual refueling behavior.
  • Restrict use to certain days of the week or times.
  • Deactivate cards if they will not be used in the foreseeable future.
  • Only activate cards on request for a short time - they will then automatically become inactive again.

  • If you enter an incorrect PIN, you will be notified immediately.
  • Receive notifications of rejections due to limit overruns.
  • Customize your notification settings to stay informed at all times.

  • Managers should consistently exemplify the correct use of fuel cards.
  • Train your employees regularly about risks and the correct behavior when using cards.

  • Use a strong password to access the DKV Cockpit.
  • Be careful with suspicious emails - DKV Mobility will never ask you for your fuel card PIN by phone or e-mail!
  • If you suspect that your card has been stolen, misused or lost: block the card immediately and inform us without delay!

  • DKV LIVE detects and prevents fuel theft.
  • It provides all of your fleet's important data clearly and in real time and links it to the data on your DKV Card. This allows the system to track refueling processes and transactions live and deactivate the fuel card concerned immediately in the event of suspicious activity.
