The toll for vehicles weighing 3.5 tons or more in Germany
As of July 2024, a toll reform is in force in Germany, which also affects vehicles from 3.5 tonnes or more. In addition, there will be a CO2 differentiation in the truck toll. The aim of the toll reform is to include commercial freight transport of 3.5 tons or more in a cost allocation and to introduce a CO2 surcharge.

Information on the CO2 toll in Germany
The EU has set itself the target of reducing CO2 emissions in road transport by 30% (compared to 2005). The categorisation in a toll tariff is therefore extended by the categorisation in a CO2 class.
Since 01.12.2023, all commercial vehicles over 7.5 tonnes in Germany must pay a CO2-dependent HGV toll.
With the introduction of the toll over 3.5 tonnes on 01.07.2024, the HGV toll will also apply to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

Customers who are registered directly with Toll Collect (TC) can use {{"link": "https://www.toll-collect.de/de/toll_collect/rund_um_die_maut/co2_emissionen/co2_emissionen.html", "linkStyle": "default", "linkTitle": "TC's CO2 emission class finder", "linkType": "external", "aria-label": "TC's CO2 emission class finder", "linkLabel": "TC's CO2 emission class finder", "target": "_blank"}} and upload the necessary vehicle documents directly to the TC portal.
TC describes on the {{"link": "https://www.toll-collect.de/de/toll_collect/service/fragen___antworten/mautaenderungen_2023_und_2024/emissionsklassenfinder/p1745_faq_emissionsklassen_finder.html", "linkStyle": "default", "linkTitle": "website", "linkType": "external", "aria-label": "website", "linkLabel": "website", "target": "_blank"}} that emission class 1 is stored for all vehicles registered to date. Customers can use the emission class finder to check which CO2 emission class the respective vehicle is assigned to.
From July 2023, customers can apply to change the emissions class for each vehicle directly in the TC Customer Portal.
Customers who use the Toll2Go product for the toll service in Germany and Austria and whose vehicles have a CO2 emission class higher than 1 must upload the evidence to the Toll Collect and ASFINAG self-care portal.
Emission-free HGVs are to be exempt from the toll until 31 December 2025. From 1 January 2026, 25 percent of the regular toll rate will be due for infrastructure costs, which corresponds to a 75 percent reduction in the toll rate - plus the toll components for noise and air pollution.
Emission-free electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered vehicles as well as vehicles with a hydrogen fuel cell will remain exempt from the toll until the end of 2025 (if you are interested, see {{"link": "https://www.toll-collect.de/de/toll_collect/rund_um_die_maut/meldungen/detailsseite_news_31936.html", "linkStyle": "default", "linkTitle": "the Toll Collect article", "linkType": "external", "aria-label": "the Toll Collect article", "linkLabel": "the Toll Collect article", "target": "_blank"}}).
From 1 January 2026, only 25 percent of the toll rate will have to be paid for zero-emission vehicles.
Emission-free vehicles up to 4.25 tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW) are permanently exempt from the toll. The promotion of light and heavy commercial vehicles with alternative, climate-friendly drive systems and the associated refuelling and charging infrastructure is also to be extended until 2028.
Buses for passenger transport are exempt from tolls in Germany until further notice.
The implementation of the proposed legislation is based on the amended Eurovignette Directive, which came into force in March 2022.
The introduction of additional CO2 pricing in the lorry toll is seen as a further instrument for climate protection in road freight transport, as commercial vehicles currently produce around a third of total CO2 emissions in the transport sector. In this way, the German government wants to accelerate the switch to climate-neutral drive systems and send a signal that makes the use of lorries with alternative drive systems more attractive for the freight transport industry.
The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV) anticipates {{"link": "https://www.bundesregierung.de/breg-de/aktuelles/lkw-maut-co2-2194574", "linkStyle": "default", "linkTitle": "additional revenue of 26.6 billion euros in 2024 and 2027", "linkType": "external", "aria-label": "additional revenue of 26.6 billion euros in 2024 and 2027", "linkLabel": "additional revenue of 26.6 billion euros in 2024 and 2027", "target": "_blank"}} as a result of the CO2 differentiation for trucks weighing 7.5 tonnes or more.
This toll revenue will be earmarked for improving the federal trunk road infrastructure and for measures in the mobility sector - the focus is on federal railways. The additional revenue from the toll extension to HGVs over 3.5 tonnes will amount to 3.9 billion euros over the same period. Of this, 1.8 billion euros will be used for CO2 differentiation.

Guideline for trucks
The level of the toll in Germany is determined by Emission class, the CO2 class, number of axles and the length of the toll route driven.
In addition to motorways, federal roads are also subject to a distance-based toll.
TOLL2GO
With TOLL2GO, DKV customers can also use the Toll Collect on-board unit (OBU) for Austrian toll roads. By doing this, you also benefit from the many advantages of the cross-border OBU for Germany and Austria.
Cost of TOLL2GO
The TOLL2GO service is offered free of charge for existing customers of ASFINAG and Toll Collect. ASFINAG will continue to charge a one-off processing fee of EUR 5 in the case of new customers (those signing up for the first time)
