Upcoming changes to tolling in France

Starting on January 1, 2027, the French region of Alsace will introduce a new distance-based toll system for heavy goods vehicles. Toll charges will be calculated based on the number of kilometers driven and collected via a satellite-based system. The Grand Est region is expected to follow on April 1, 2027.

What does this mean for you?

Depending on your driving profile and the toll solution you currently use, an adjustment may be required. Customers using toll roads in Alsace will need a suitable solution for digital toll collection. Customers who do not operate in Alsace do not need to take any action at this time.

At the same time, France will shut down its 2G mobile network on December 31, 2026. As a result, certain existing toll solutions may need to be upgraded to 4G-capable technology.

This particularly affects customers using France services with a 2G DKV BOX EUROPE. Due to the 2G network shutdown, these customers will need to switch to a 4G-capable toll solution.

Customers using a DKV BOX TIS PL or DKV BOX SELECT will need to migrate to a GNSS-capable solution, as these devices do not support the GNSS technology required for the new toll roads in Alsace.

Availability of the new toll regions

The new Alsace toll service will be available on the DKV BOX EUROPE and DKV BOX FLEX. The France service can already be ordered. With the DKV BOX FLEX, use in France will be possible from November 1, 2026.

The new toll regions will be activated automatically. This applies to Alsace from January 1, 2027, and to Grand Est, expected from April 1, 2027.
