4G Technology in Europe

field-key__text-body-bottom

With the Europe-wide shutdown of 2G and 3G networks, toll systems are also being modernised: only toll boxes with 4G capability will ensure reliable toll collection in many countries in the long term. Toll boxes that support 2G/3G will gradually stop working.

When you should plan the switch, which countries are affected, and which alternatives will continue to be available for toll collection without a 4G box – you can find out all of this here.

Schweiz

text-size-headline-h2

As of 01 July, only 4G-capable toll boxes can be used in Switzerland. Older devices without 4G technology will no longer be supported after this date.

Your alternative

In addition to a 4G-capable toll box, we offer you two further options to continue settling Swiss toll charges smoothly after 01 July.

1. Toll payment via the webshop of the Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS / BAZG)

Pay Swiss toll charges easily online via the webshop of the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) and select the DKV Card as your payment method.

You can book your journeys up to 5 days in advance and should specify the expected number of kilometres as accurately as possible. After the journey, you can adjust the details to the actual kilometres driven within 5 days.

2. National toll solution NATRAS

Alternatively, the national Swiss toll box NATRAS is available. The NATRAS box is obtained directly from the Swiss toll operator and is specifically designed for use in the Swiss toll system. It is particularly suitable for companies that travel regularly in Switzerland and prefer a permanently installed national solution. Toll charges are billed directly by the BAZG.

Will my 2G OBU still be usable in Switzerland from January 2026?
You can continue to use your existing 2G DKV Box Europe without any issues until 30 June.
How long can 2G OBUs generally continue to be used?
In principle, 2G OBUs can only be used for as long as the respective network coverage and system support are maintained by the operators. Switzerland will switch on 01 July 2026; other countries such as France, the Netherlands and Germany have already announced shutdowns by the end of 2030. As 2G networks are progressively phased out, usage is therefore time-limited and will be gradually replaced by 4G-capable devices.
Which countries are switching to 4G-based toll collection and when?
Switzerland will switch to 4G on 01 July 2026. Other countries such as France, the Netherlands and Germany are planning the transition by 2030.
