DKV Mobility supports cross-border growth at OPEX Logistics

OPEX Logistics is a UK-based transport and logistics company specialising in national and international road freight. Based in Avonmouth, near Bristol, the company serves customers across the UK and Europe, particularly within the aerospace, high-end manufacturing, and retail sectors. OPEX is recognised for its reliability, transparency, and hands-on approach. Since its inception with just six vehicles in 2003, it has grown into a trusted logistics partner with a fleet of over 80 vehicles.
“When I joined ten years ago, we had around a dozen trucks,” says Stephen Kempton, OPEX's General Manager. “Today, we operate just under eighty vehicles, employ 146 drivers, and our turnover has risen from approximately £3.5 million to around £25 million.”
As the company has expanded, its operations have become more complex. Currently, around 40 per cent of OPEX’s work involves international routes to Germany, France, Belgium, and Italy. Managing fuel, toll transactions, and VAT reclaims across multiple borders requires a reliable, centralised partner.
“You can’t afford to get stuck at a toll gate or waste time comparing fuel prices. We needed consistency and simplicity,” explains Stephen.
A partnership built on reliability
OPEX has worked with DKV Mobility for over fifteen years. From the outset, the partnership has been founded on trust, efficiency, and a shared commitment to ensuring seamless cross-border operations.
“In the UK, we use DKV Mobility with the Keyfuels network because the pricing is consistent,” says Stephen. “That’s more important to us than occasionally securing a slightly cheaper rate. We don’t need to shop around; we know the price is fair and stable, and we trust Neil White (Country Manager), Nathan Burgess (our dedicated Account Manager), and the rest of the DKV Mobility team to take care of us.”
Across Europe, OPEX relies on DKV Mobility for refuelling and toll services. Every vehicle in the fleet is equipped with the DKV Box Europe, which enables seamless toll transactions across multiple countries.
“A few years ago, drivers had several devices on their dashboards. Now, there’s just one box, and it works everywhere. It’s the simplest system we’ve seen on the market.”
For Stephen, this simplicity makes a daily difference.
“The all-in-one system gives us peace of mind. Our drivers know they’ll never get stuck, and our admin team knows invoicing will be straightforward.”
Consistency driving efficiency
As OPEX’s European network expanded, so did the complexity of its financial processes. Brexit, for example, complicated VAT reclaims in countries like Germany and Belgium and made excise duty refunds less predictable.
However, with DKV Mobility’s net invoicing and refund services, OPEX can manage these processes transparently and efficiently.
“DKV Mobility has the strongest network across Europe and the UK,” says Stephen. “They deliver what we ask for, when we need it. Having all our European requirements under one roof makes life much easier.”

Preparing for a sustainable future
OPEX already operates an environmentally responsible and efficient fleet. The company's headquarters are fitted with solar panels and heat pumps, and all vehicles meet EURO 6 standards. The company also invests in driver training to help reduce emissions.
Discussions regarding renewable fuels, such as HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), are underway, particularly with OPEX’s aerospace and retail clients.
“Some of our customers are still defining their environmental targets,” says Stephen. “We’re ready to adapt to whatever direction they choose, whether that’s HVO or electric vehicles, and we know DKV Mobility can support us with the right solutions.”
